biography

Cynthia Hartling was born in Albany, New York and lives and works in New York City. She received her BFA from Cooper Union, New York and has also studied at the Istituto Statale d'Arte in Urbino, Italy and SUNY, New Paltz.

Her work has been shown in exhibitions nationally and internationally, including the Brooklyn Museum, Pierogi, 490 Atlantic, Janet Kurnatowski Gallery, Centotto, STOREFRONT, Sideshow, and Lesley Heller Fine Art, New York; Shellnutt Gallery, Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY; Santa Monica Museum of Art and ShoeboxLA, Los Angeles, CA; Brattleboro Museum & Art Center and The Michael S. Currier Center Gallery, Vermont; Berkshire Museum, Massachusetts; Beverley Knowles Fine Art, London; Tete, Berlin, Germany; and Castello Aragonese, Otranto, Italy. She was included in I DON’T POEM: an anthology of painters, by Claudia La Rocco, and on the cover of Sharmila Voorakkara’s book of poems Firewheel.

She has been nominated for a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, and awarded a Carlo Cego fellowship at BAU Institute, Otranto, Italy, a Milton and Sally Michel Avery endowed residency for visual arts at Yaddo, a Barbara White endowed painting fellowship at Vermont Studio Center, and fellowships at Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts, VCCA, Fundacion Valparaiso, Art Farm, and Jentel.
